2017 June Ordeal - Candidate Reservation Form

2017 Candidate Letter

Candidate Information Package

Candidate Information:

The Order of the Arrow (OA) was founded by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson in 1915 at the Treasure Island Camp of the Philadelphia Council, Boy Scouts of America. It became an official program experiment in 1922 and was approved as part of the Scouting program in 1934. In 1948 the OA, recognized as the BSA's national brotherhood of honor campers, became an official part of the national camping program of the Boy Scouts of America. The purpose of the Order of the Arrow is four fold:

  1. To recognize those Scouts & Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives.
  2. To develop and maintain camping traditions and spirit.
  3. To promote Scout camping.
  4. To crystallize the Scout habit of helpfulness into a life purpose of leadership in cheerful service to others.

1.  The Ordeal

The Ordeal is the first step toward full membership in the Order of the Arrow. During the ordeal experience, candidates maintain silence, receive small amounts of food, work on camp improvement projects, and sleep apart from other campers. The entire experience is designed to teach significant values. All candidates for membership into the Order must complete the Ordeal.  The Ordeal starts on a Friday evening and is over by mid-day Sunday.

2.  What to bring

The Ordeal is a weekend of service and fellowship. You should only bring:

3. Ordeal Reservation Form

Please be sure to send in the reservation forms and a copy of your current medical form.  Use the candidate form, not the member form, so that we can ensure that the needed resources are available for you.  The Candidate Ordeal Registration form and the Medical forms can also be found on the Forms page.

4. Ordeal Handouts

If you have lost the Handouts, they are available on our forms page.  The Candidate Booklet contains protected material. If you have misplaced your booklet, please contact your village officer in the contact section.

5. Contacts

If you have questions, or need a ride, please feel free to contact your local Village officers or Advisers that serve your district.  Advisers are adults, all other officers are the youth who actually run things.
